The Masta Range Guide: Which Rug Does Your Horse Need?
Masta has been making rugs since 1976. Fifty years in, the brand vision hasn't moved: protection that's proven, accessible, and designed to perform. The mission is even simpler: Masta for every horse, solving real problems horse owners face.
That's why there are four Masta ranges instead of one. Each one was built around a specific, common problem, not just a different price point. Here's what each range was built to solve, and why.

Fieldmasta: Built to Help Prevent Mane Loss
Mane rubbing is the UK's most common rug-related problem. In Masta's survey of 1,884 horse owners, more than half said their horse had experienced it. The culprit is often a traditional neck cover that sits directly against the mane for hours at a time, creating constant friction and restricting airflow. Over time, this can damage the hair follicles and lead to hair loss.
Fieldmasta's award-winning Dome Neck was developed specifically to tackle that issue. A series of carefully placed darts creates additional space over the crest of the neck, lifting the fabric away from the mane rather than allowing it to sit flat against it. By reducing pressure and improving airflow, the Dome Neck helps protect the mane and supports healthier hair growth.
The same Dome Neck design is incorporated into the Stablemasta range, providing consistent protection both in the field and in the stable. For horses prone to rubbing, that means round-the-clock comfort without the need to switch between a turnout rug that protects the mane and a stable rug that doesn't.
Before Fieldmasta, rug design focused primarily on keeping horses warm and dry, with mane loss often accepted as an unavoidable consequence of winter rugging. Fieldmasta challenged that thinking by creating one of the first rugs designed not only for protection from the elements, but also to help maintain a healthy mane.
The full story of how the dome neck came about, including a year of prototype testing across breeds from Arabs to Irish Drafts, is in our Tackling Mane Loss blog.

Turnoutmasta: Built for Broader Builds
Half of UK horses have broader shoulders or a wider chest, yet 6 in 10 owners of broad-built horses say they struggle to find a rug that fits properly. Many owners resort to sizing up, but this often creates new problems, with excess fabric around the hindquarters causing slipping, rubbing and an overall poor fit.
Turnoutmasta was created to solve that challenge. Instead of simply scaling a standard rug up or down, it was designed around the shape of broader horses, with a deeper shoulder cut, wider neck opening and more generous gussets. The result is a rug that accommodates cobs, heavyweight hunters and other substantial builds without compromising fit elsewhere. The 2025 relaunch refined the pattern further, creating a fit that works equally well for broader, deeper horses and more regular shapes across the range.

Ventomasta: Built for Choice Without Compromise
Great rug design shouldn't be reserved for the highest price points. Ventomasta was developed to make Masta's expertise in fit, comfort and protection accessible to more horse owners, proving that affordability doesn't have to mean compromise. Built using the same in-house pattern-making knowledge as every other Masta range, Ventomasta delivers dependable performance where it matters most.
That commitment to continuous improvement led to the launch of VentoPlus in 2026. Shaped by customer feedback, it offers greater adjustability and a higher waterproof rating, giving owners even more confidence that they're getting exceptional value without sacrificing protection or fit.

Protechmasta: Wearable Therapy For Your Horse
Most rugs are designed with a single purpose in mind: keeping a horse warm and dry. Protechmasta was created to go beyond that. Combining award-winning design with far-infrared (FIR) technology, the range was developed to support circulation, recovery and overall wellbeing as part of a horse's everyday routine.
From the outset, the focus was on creating a therapy system that horse owners would genuinely use. Practical, lightweight and easy to transport, Protechmasta was designed to fit seamlessly into daily life, whether supporting recovery after exercise, aiding horses on box rest or helping them stay comfortable while travelling. Crucially, the range was developed in collaboration with riders, vets and physiotherapists, ensuring its benefits were informed by both scientific research and real-world experience.
Alice Masta, Design Lead, explains:
"When we developed Protechmasta, our goal was to give horse owners access to a practical, easy-to-use therapy system that could fit seamlessly into daily life. We worked closely with riders, vets and physiotherapists, carrying out extensive testing and clinical trials to ensure the benefits were backed by both science and real-world experience. That's what gives us confidence in the products we bring to market."
Since launching in 2017, Protechmasta has supported thousands of horses, becoming a trusted part of everyday care routines. More than just a rug, it helped make therapeutic support more accessible to owners looking to promote recovery, comfort and wellbeing as part of their horse's long-term health.

How to Choose the Right Masta Range
Masta's research shows there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to horse rugs. Three in four owners say their horse's body shape affects how well a rug fits, and what works for a cob won't necessarily work for a warmblood, thoroughbred or heavyweight hunter. That's why Masta's collections have been developed as distinct ranges, each designed to solve a specific challenge, rather than offering the same rug at different price points.
Choosing the right range starts by identifying the problem you're trying to solve. If mane rubbing is a concern, Fieldmasta and Stablemasta feature the award-winning Dome Neck design to help protect the mane. If finding a rug that accommodates a broader chest and shoulder is a constant frustration, Turnoutmasta's deeper cut and more generous fit could be the answer. For owners looking for dependable everyday performance at an accessible price point, Ventomasta offers practical protection without unnecessary extras. And for horses requiring additional recovery support, Protechmasta combines rug design with far-infrared technology to promote comfort and wellbeing.
At the heart of every range is the same commitment to thoughtful design and attention to detail. As Alice, Design Lead at Masta, explains:
"As a designer, getting the fit right is always my starting point. Every Masta rug is created in-house, and we carefully refine every detail, from the pattern and cut to the fittings and colour choices. We never rely on generic, off-the-shelf designs. Others can copy the look, but they can't replicate the expertise behind it."
More than 40 years after the first Masta rug was created, that philosophy continues to shape every product in the collection: understanding real-world challenges, listening to horse owners, and designing solutions that make a genuine difference to horses' comfort, protection and wellbeing.

Masta Range FAQs
What's the difference between Fieldmasta and Turnoutmasta?
While both ranges focus on improving comfort and fit, they solve different challenges. Fieldmasta was developed around Masta's award-winning Dome Neck technology, designed to help reduce mane rubbing by lifting material away from the crest of the neck. Turnoutmasta, on the other hand, was created for horses with broader shoulders and chests, using a deeper cut, wider neck opening and more generous gussets to provide a better fit. Some horses may benefit from one range, while others could benefit from elements of both.
Is Protechmasta safe to use every day?
ProTechMasta was designed to be incorporated into everyday horse care and is commonly used before and after exercise, during box rest and as part of a regular recovery routine. As with any therapy product, it's sensible to introduce it gradually and monitor your horse's response. If your horse has an existing medical condition, consult your vet before use.
Does far-infrared (FIR) therapy work for horses?
Far-infrared technology works by gently increasing warmth within the tissues beneath the skin, which is believed to support circulation and relaxation. Research carried out on the Protechaasta range recorded measurable changes in skin temperature consistent with this effect, while vets and equine professionals involved in trials reported positive observations in horses using the products. As with any therapeutic aid, results can vary between individuals, and FIR therapy should be used to complement, not replace, appropriate veterinary care.
Which Masta range is best for a cob or broad-built horse?
Turnoutmasta was developed specifically for broader horse shapes, including cobs, heavyweight hunters and horses with wider shoulders and chests. Rather than relying on owners sizing up, the range uses a pattern designed around these builds, helping achieve a more comfortable and secure fit without excess material elsewhere.
Can I use more than one Masta range for the same horse?
Absolutely. Each Masta range has been created to address a specific need, so many owners use different products as part of their horse's overall care routine. For example, a horse prone to mane rubbing may wear a Fieldmasta turnout rug while also benefiting from ProTechMasta therapy products as part of its recovery programme. The ranges are designed to work alongside one another, giving owners the flexibility to choose the right solution for their horse.
How do I know which Masta range is right for my horse?
The best place to start is by identifying the challenge you're trying to solve. If your horse struggles with mane rubbing, Fieldmasta or Stablemasta may be the best fit. If finding a rug that accommodates a broad chest and shoulder has always been difficult, Turnoutmasta was designed specifically for that problem. If you're looking for dependable everyday protection at an accessible price point, Ventomasta offers excellent value, while Protechaasta is designed for horses that could benefit from additional support with recovery and wellbeing.
